Panasonic Camcorder Studio Package PDF Print E-mail

Image

Pictured above is one of the most highly anticipated solutions offered by Panasonic. By adding
these Camcorder Studio Package items to a Panasonic P2 shoulder-mounted camcorder like
the AG-HPX300 you can now offer a full HD quality, affordable Studio Camera package to your
customers. In addition, the Camcorder Studio Package will also work with a limited number of
popular tape based camcorders such as the AJ-HDX900 and the AJ-HDX400.
Most systems will use the AG-BS300 (base station), the AG-CA300 (camera adapter) and the AGEC4
(remote control). Three cable lengths are available as well25M (82 Feet), 50M (164 feet) and
100M (328 feet)
When you wish to use the ENG viewfinder instead of a monitor, you need to supply a piece
called the AG-YA500 which allows the ENG viewfinder to receive return video and tally from
the switcher. For those customers that prefer a little more sophistication in their control, the
system can also work with the popular AJ-RC10 remote.

Key features :
 Remote control of various popular cameras, AJ-HPX3700, HPX2700, HPX3000, HPX2000, AG-HPX500, HPX300, AJ-HDX400, AJ-HDX900
 Full connection support - HD-SDI, Embedded Audio, Gen-lock, Tally, Return Video and Power
 Digital signal transmission ensures high-quality, degradation-free images.
 The base station and camera adaptor can be separated up to a distance of 328' (100 meters).
 Three cable lengths available, 25M (82 Feet), 50M (164 feet) and 100M (328 feet)
 Connection of the AG-EC4G Extension Control Unit or AJ-RC10G Remote Control Unit enables camera recorder control as well.
 Up to 70 watts of power can be supplied to the camcorder which allows for monitors and other devices to be powered at the camera head as well.

AG-CA300 Camera Adapter

 Image

The AG-CA300 camera adapter attaches by sliding it into the Anton Bauer Gold Mount on the back of the camera. The camcorder and the camera adapter are powered through the Anton Bauer adapter. Since the camerareceives its power through the Gold Mount plate, the first
requirement is to set the camera to receive a 12V signal though the AB plate. This is accomplished in the menus by setting the camera up for a Type A Battery with the Beginning Voltage at 13V, Near End at 12.5V. and End at 11.5V. This will prevent the camera from flashing a false low battery alert . The camera adapter has three standard accessories included in the box. The first is a small jumper cable for the remote control , the second is a viewfinder connection cable, and the third Anton Bauer Gold Mount is for optional use. This Viewfinder Cable allows for the monitor image to be switched back and forth between the Return Video and live Viewfinder Display. Please note that the VF cable will only send out what the native VF is able to display, so special consideration is needed when working with the AG-HPX500 which uses an SD viewfinder and with the larger cameras that are equipped with the AJHVF21, which is a 1080i only viewfinder. There are alternatives and hopefully by the time we are finished here you will know them. The Anton Bauer Battery plate has the value of battery operation in shoulder mounted operation as it would eliminate the heavy power cable leaving the only cables to be two BNC cables for the full run length. Please note that Belden RG-6 with a double braid is the minimum spec for the Coax cable. As you can see from the picture it is simply a matter of opening the back plate on the camera adapter and making the connections to put the Anton Bauer Plate in place.

With the Cable packages you will find 2 short cables with right angle BNC connectors that will allow for the Genlock signal to come into the camera and HD-SDI to come back to the base station. Lastly it is important to note that if supplying local power for the camera, you must supply it through the Camera Adapter or else the Camera Adapter will not power up. Thus keeping track of that Anton Bauer Adapter is extremely important should your customer ever wish to run the system with local power.

AG-BS300 Camcorder Studio Base Station

 Image

The Base station is a single rack unit offering all connections on the back with the exception of a singular intercom connection.
Three cables travel to the camera head including DC power and two long BNC to BNC cables. One of the cables carries a multiplexed signal for remote control, return video, intercom, and genlock. Audio is embedded in the HD-SDI signal returning to the base station.

As mentioned earlier, if you want a signal different that what the native viewfinder offers (SD for the HPX500 and 1080i for the AJ-HVF21) you will need to use a local monitor mounted to the top of the camera. Or in the case of the more expensive cameras, you can upgrade the viewfinder to a format switchable color viewfinder like the AJ-HVF27B. In the case of the HPX500, since there is only one HD-SDI output on the camera, we recommend using an AJA HD10C HD-SDI DA so that you have an output to the local monitor one for sending back to the Base Station. The component input on the monitor will be used by the Return Video fed from the back of the CA300. If you choose not to do this with the HPX500, the alternative will be that you will be trying to focus on the BTLH80WU monitor in Standard Def.

AG-EC4 Remote Extension

Image The new AG-EC4 remote, which has a vague similarity to the long discontinued AJ-EC3, will work with all of the cameras that work with the AJ-RC10, and it is less expensive. It offers a range of functions and with a new rack-mountable shelf, you will be able to mount up to 4 units together. The shelf’s model number and price will be in the follow-up marketing bulletin on the studio system. While the studio system will work with either the RC10 or the EC4, there are a few qualifiers for the RC10 versus the EC4. The first is that there is the ability to save and recall scene files at the remote control. With the EC4, you would have to change the SD cards at the camera end and then have the EC4 call up the menus and read the scene files. The second would be if you wanted to activate a frame rate ramp on the Varicams, this is not possible on the EC4. Thirdly there are more direct, active buttons to use for functions on the RC10, thereby making it seem like a shortcut versus having to fish out the right menu item. When running seperately and not in the studio system the AJ-RC10 can go out to 90 Meters while the EC4 is limited to 50 meters (164 feet.) Another nice function of the remotes is that there is full record control built-in, so if there is a need to ISO record that too can be controlled by the operator back in the control room. Please note that the remote will not add functionality that is not included in that camera model (example: 12 point color correction)

AG-YA500 Viewfinder Adapter
This adapter is for use when the cameras are to be left on the cameraperson’s shoulder and both Tally and Return needs to show up in the ENG Viewfinder. (Because the AG-HPX300 does not have the ability to “unplug” its viewfinder this unit cannot be used with it.) This unit plugs into the camera where the Viewfinder normally would and the VF plugs into it. The lens plugs into the adapter so that the Return button on the lens can call for the return video, and the AGYA300 plugs into the camera where the lens normally would so that the lens can still give and get information concerning exposure and Chroma Aberration Compensation. The last connection made with the YA500 is to the CA300 Camera Adapter. Keep in mind that the only time you need this is when you want the tally indication and return in the ENG Viewfinder. Also remember that the display in the VF will only be what the Viewfinder can display. This means that for the expensive cameras, they will need to be fitted with the color Viewfinder if the customer wants to shoot in 720P. For the HPX500, the Return video will need to be down-converted prior to the base station.

300LensReturn
When operating a studio camera more often than not the camera operator will want to check the return video to frame up their own shot. Typically that is done by pressing the return video button on the rear lens control. This is accomplished with this system by adding an additional cable called the 300LensReturn. It fits in between the lens and the camera and extends to the back of the camera adapter where it connects to the RETurn ConTRoL connector.

Studio Cables
There are three different lengths of studio cables, 25M(82ft), 50M(164ft), 100M(328ft). The Studio300/100, Studio300/50, and Studio300/25.
