June 4, 2010 - The PMW-EX3/2 now includes a promotional 16GB card, as well as several running changes
made to the camcorder itself. These changes include the following:
1. The lens hand grip has been changed to the same hand grip as that of the PMW-EX1R, with
improved ergonomics for increased user comfort when used hand-held.
2. The handgrip also incorporates a One-Push Auto Iris button, again similar to the PMW-EX1R,
which the camcorder (PMW-EX3) fully supports.
3. The lens focus ring, which is slideable from the AF/MF position to the Full MF postion, now
includes the easily seen orange painted ring like the PMW-EX1R so that the current
operational position of the focus ring can be easily discerned.
4. As mentioned previously, the PMW-EX3/2 now includes a promotional 16GB SxS card (A
stock ONLY).
Please Note: The model number on the camcorder itself remains PMW-EX3, as well as on all related
literature and documentation. Pricing is also unchanged.

Sony is pleased to announce the introduction of the new PMW-EX3 XDCAM® EX Camcorder. This exciting new
addition to Sony’s XDCAM EX family of professional tapeless acquisition tools further evolves the XDCAM EX lineup,
and continues to address the ever increasing demand for affordable high definition (HD) production solutions.

Like its sibling, PMW-EX1, the PMW-EX3 couples Sony’s three newly designed 1/2-inch type Exmor™ CMOS sensors,
each with an effective pixel count of 1920 x 1080, with Sony’s newly developed signal processing LSI. Easily
capable of producing truly exceptional images in 1080p, 720p and 1080i HD, and incorporating all of the great
features and basic specifications of the PMW-EX1, the PMW-EX3 also adds an interchangeable lens system.

The newly developed 1/2-inch type “EX mount” interchangeable lens system utilized by the PMW-EX3 allows the
lens to be as compact and lightweight as possible while maintaining its high optical performance. The included
high quality, high definition 14x Fujinon lens, which has been especially designed for use with the XDCAM EX
camcorder, offers optimum performance and unprecedented functionality. Additionally, the PMW-EX3’s new lens
mount system allows a variety of 1/2-inch type HD lenses available from major manufacturers to be used with the
PMW-EX3 camcorder via the supplied lens adaptor. 2/3-inch-type lenses can also be used with the PMW-EX3
camcorder via this special mount system by using a 2/3-inch type lens adaptor that is equipped with a 12-pin lens
connector, like the ACM-21 adapter available from Fujinon. The PMW-EX3 can even be used with cinema-style
lenses, making it fully adaptable to suit every specific shooting requirement.

Like the PMW-EX1, the PMW-EX3 uses another recent Sony innovation, the SxS™ Memory Card flash memory device.
This recording system enables very high data transfer speeds which enhance the high definition content creation
workflow. Utilizing the MPEG-2 Long GOP CODEC to achieve a balance of quality and the required bit rate, the
PMW-EX3 offers a long recording time – approximately 140 minutes using two 16GB SxS Memory Cards. Additionally,
the powerful Slow & Quick Motion feature, or what is more commonly known as “over-cranking” and “undercranking”,
enables users to create slow and fast motion special effects.

In addition to the extensive list of features and specifications the PMW-EX3 shares with the PMW-EX1, this
extraordinary new camcorder also offers TC In/Out, and GENLOCK In connectivity. Also included is an 8-pin
REMOTE connector, allowing various camera settings to be remotely controlled using an optional RM-B150 or RMB750
Remote Control Unit. These additional features certainly open up the list of possible applications to include
multi-camera and studio configurations.

*Hoodman adaptors, kits and SDHC cards are an alternative replacement for Sony's SxS Media. The Hoodman solution utilizes an adapter that fits into the SxS slot on the camera. Into the adapter fits a relatively low cost SDHC card. The camera records onto the SDHC card, “piggybacked” through the SxS card adapter.
We want to make sure that our customers do their research, and understand the performance differences inherent in their use.
The first major difference is that the Hoodman solution is only available in a 16GB capacity. Although 32GB SDHC cards do exist, none are currently problem-free enough for Hoodman to offer it with their adapter. Users of the Hoodman adapter who have tried it with other brands of 32GB SDHC cards have had very sporadic experience and numorous problems with it. Next, over/under cranking will be a problem. The Hoodman solution does not support slow or quick motion recording with EX cameras. There are also situations where the media is not recognized by the camera, as reported by actual EX camera users. If files are written back to the SDHC card during ingest, which is sometimes the case with Macs, (where an index file is written back to the card), the camcorder most likely will not “restore the media” with the SDHC card as it would with Sony's SxS or PHU media. In rare cases contact problems may occur because the media is not directly in contact with the camera, but piggybacked through the adapter. Lastly, due to the Hoodman solution utilizing USB2 technology for data transfer vs. the Sony SxS PCI ExpressCard standard, data transfer rates to your computer or hard drive will be slower, so transferring footage will take longer.
The XDCAM EX system was specially engineered by Sony using the camera and SXS or PHU Media together. Sony cannot rely on 3rd party manufacturers whose manufacturing practices and components may vary, possibly compromising the performance and reliability of the equipment. We suggest you make sure of what you are buying and do not make a buying decision based solely on the initial purchase cost, or on something you heard or saw on the internet.
In closing, remember that Sony may not support the usage of alternative media, and may not be able to help solve any problems that you may encounter as they normally would when using Sony media.  More importantly, although this alternative media can be purchased, it cannot be returned.
